Detroit Lions hire Jim Caldwell as head coach

The Detroit Lions announced on Tuesday that the team had hired Jim Caldwell to be the next head coach after the team parted ways with Jim Schwartz.

According to ESPN, the Baltimore Raven's offensive coordinator reportedly wasn't the team's top choice, but Caldwell was selected when San Diego's Ken Whisenhunt decided to take the top job with the Tennessee Titans.

The Lions only interviewed a total of four candidates before selecting Caldwell, others interviewed include former Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, Whisenhunt and former Titans coach Mike Munchak.

CBS Sports reports that the former Indianapolis head coach, who won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning, was the first to be interviewed. Afterwards NFL Insider Jason La Canfora had reported that Caldwell "earned rave reviews and clicked with quarterback Matt Stafford."

He was originally the Ravens' quarterback coach before the team fire OC Cam Cameron and elevated Caldwell just as the team went on its Super Bowl run. ESPN notes that the Caldwell's offense wasn't especially great as the Ravens ranked 29th in total offense and 25th in scoring.
