Drew Barrymore talks 'complicated' relationship with mom Jaid Barrymore

Drew Barrymore is opening up about her relationship with her estranged mother, Jaid Barrymore, in the new issue of Marie Claire. The soon-to-be mother of two, 38, has had a strained relationship with her 67-year-old mother since the ‘80s.

In the February issue of Marie Claire, Barrymore lamented, "Ugh, I mean, my relationship with my mom is so complicated.”

She admitted when she had her daughter, Olive, 15 months, she reconnected with her mom and found a newfound respect for her. "I've always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it," she said.

"However, [becoming a mom] hasn't enabled me to lessen the distance. It's the hardest subject in my life. I've never just been angry with her. I've always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other's lives at this point."

Barrymore entered rehab at the age of 14 after her mom took her clubbing. By the age of 15, she was living in her own apartment and got juvenile emancipation from her parents. The actress’ father, John Drew Barrymore, died in 2004 at the age of 72.

"When I was a kid, everything was so unplanned, my parents were so erratic, and my world was so inconsistent. I was 14 when I moved into my own apartment. I was so scared. I didn’t know anything,” she said. “I didn’t know you had to throw food out when it rotted in the fridge. I was convinced someone was going to crawl through my window. I would go to the Laundromat and sit there reading Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath."

Us Weekly notes Barrymore married art consultant Will Kopelman in 2012 and she has a great relationship with his parents. They're currently expecting her second child.
