Food nutrition labels are changing

The labels on the back of food packages may soon become easier to understand. According to the Federal Drug Administration, the interest and understanding of nutrition has changed over the last 20 years, therefore the labels should too.

Studies are suggesting that many more people are reading labels now. One key problem with the current label is that nutrients are listed in grams, a measurement most people do not use.

The goal is for the new labels to be more relevant, and more accurately depict what people are looking for in food. According to AssociatedPress, Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest said, "When you look at the label, there are roughly two dozen numbers of substances that people aren't intuitively familiar with."

There are many potential changes that could be made, such as emphasizing the calorie count. According to CNN the focus was on fat content, but has shifted to calorie counting which could be a healthier way to plan meals.
