Fox orders new reality series 'Utopia' from John de Mol

Fox has a new reality show on the horizon with Utopia, a new reality series created by Big Brother and The Voice creator John de Mol.

According to Variety, Utopia is based on the hit Dutch TV series of the same name. The format of the show is that of a social experiment in which a group of 15 strangers is sent to a remote location to create a new society. The show follows these people for a year, with cameras watching them 24/7 in typical reality show fashion. De Mol is set to executive produce the show.

After the show’s success in the Netherlands, Deadline reported, networks became very interested in adapting the show for US audiences. Fox has won the bidding rights, and this is the first series greenlighted by Fox’s new head of alternative content, Simon Andreae.

"Utopia will be the largest, most ambitious social experiment on television," Andreae said, according to USA Today.

The show is slated for a summer release, but this is liable to change. Fox reportedly has plans to air the show both on TV and online.
