Hilary Mantel writes new book on Margaret Thatcher after winning Booker Prizes with Thomas Cromwell novels

After earning acclaim for works set centuries ago, British writer Hilary Mantel has decided to focus on recent history for her new book. The collection of short stories will focus on the late Margaret Thatcher and titled The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.

Mantel became the first female British author to win a second Man Booker Prize in October 2012 for Bring Up The Bodies. She previously won for Wolf Hall, which, like Bodies, was set during the reign of King Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell in the 16th Century. However on Friday, her publishers said that her next book will be about Thatcher, who died in April 2013.

“A new book from Hilary Mantel is a treat. ‘Where her last two novels explore how modern England was forged, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher shows us the country we have become,” Nicholas Pearson, publishing director at 4th Estate, said in a statement, reports The Daily Mail. “These stories are Mantel at her observant best.”

The Assassination will feature 10 stories about Thatcher. Her publisher did not say when the book would be released.

Mantel is also working on a third book to finish her Cromwell trilogy. The BBC reports that she has said that she may take years to write it, though. In an interview last year, she said she’s “not rushing” to finish, so her fans will have to be patient.

Mantel has written 13 books and has earned several other awards, including the Walter Scott Prize in 2010 and the Costa Book Awards in 2012.
