How did 'The Bachelor’s' Juan Pablo Galavis’ controversial comments affect the ratings for this week’s show?

The Bachelor’s Juan Pablo Galavis came under fire last week after making controversial remarks about having a gay bachelor. Luckily for Galavis and ABC, the comments didn’t affect ratings for the long-running reality show.

This week’s airing pulled 7.8 millions viewers and a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 adult demographic, according to E! Online. These stats are almost identical to last week, which garnered an audience of 7.9 million and a 2.3 rating.

Last week, the former Venezuelan soccer player opened up to The TV Page about his thoughts on having a gay or bisexual bachelor. “I don’t think it is a good example for kids to watch that on TV,” Galavis said. The single father went on to call homosexuals “more pervert in a sense.”

Thanks in part to Galavis’ two apologies and a statement issued by ABC, The Bachelor escaped a dramatic fall in ratings.

“I want to apologize to all the people I may have offended because of my comments on having a Gay or Bisexual Bachelor,” the reality show star said on his Facebook page.

He continued to say that his remarks were taken out of context and blamed his limited English vocabulary for his miscommunication. “What I meant to say was that gay people are more affectionate and intense and for a segment of the TV audience this would be too racy to accept,” Galavis said.

Mistranslation or not, The Bachelor ratings are still running strong, which is probably a huge relief for both Galavis and ABC.
