Jimi Hendrix biopic starring André 3000 set for SXSW screening

The Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Outkast’s André 3000, is set to make its debut in the U.S. during the 9 day trade show and music festival South By Southwest, SXSW, in Austin, Texas.

Billboard reports after making the rounds at the Toronto Film Festival, Jimi: All Is By My Side, which chronicles the life of Hendrix in 1966 and ’67 before the explosion of his career at the Monterey Pop Festival, is set as one of several films being shown at this year’s SXSW.

The film has been a subject of controversy, as Rolling Stone pointed out, the Hendrix estate, Experience Hendrix LLC, run by the late guitarist sister Janie, are not giving rights to the movie, or several other movies, rights to use any of Hendrix’ material. Experience Hendrix has sited they want full involvement of any project in order to use the icons music.

Several other films are lined up for the 9 days including Jason Bateman’s Bad Words and Mike Myers’ Supermensch. 76 world premieres, 10 North American and 7 U.S. premieres are set to be screened. The full list is on the SXSW website.
