Michael Cera, John Hawkes to star in Charlie Kaufman FX pilot 'How and Why'

Charlie Kaufman will be one of the many artists shooting new pilots for FX this season.

Writer Charlie Kaufman is known for his distinct vision in films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, and Adaptation. This season, he will be bringing new, exciting characters to the small screen.

Kaufman, who celebrates uncommon characters in bewildering situations, is focusing on writing about another brilliant man. In How and Why, the lead character understands nuclear physics but is clueless about life. Joining Kaufman for How and Why are popular actors, Michael Cera and John Hawkes. According to the The Hollywood Reporter, Hawkes is set to play Goodman Hesselman. Hawkes was nominated for an Oscar for Winter’s Bone, and formerly played the lead role in Deadwood. Michael Cera will portray Mendelson. Cera is best known for his work in Arrested Development.

Charlie Kaufman will write and direct the half-hour pilot for FX. Kaufman’s previous TV credits include Get a Life and The Dana Carvey Show. He is executive producing the How and Why with Anthony Bregman, according to Variety.

How and Why will begin shooting in North Carolina this Spring.
