NBC renews daytime soap 'Days of Our Lives' for two more years

A day after one of the show’s stars announced that she was leaving, NBC has decided to renew daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives for two more years. The news comes just after actress Alison Sweeney said that she is leaving this year.

The move will give Days a chance to celebrate its 50th anniversary in November 2015 with new episodes. The deal means the show will remain on air through September 2016.

Days of our Lives continues to be a fan favorite for the daytime audience and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 50th season,” NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “Days has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively due to the hard work of the producers, writers, cast and crew who have worked tirelessly to make Days the ratings success it is today.”

Days recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Drama, adding to its collection of 36 Daytime Emmy wins over the past 48 years. The show tells the story of the Bradys, the Horton and the DiMaras in the fictional town of Salem.

Executive producer Ken Corday, whose parents Betty and Ted Corday created the show, oversees production.

Sweeney told Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday that she will be leaving the show to spend more time with her family. She’s played Sami Brady since January 1993.

Days airs every day of the week, beginning at 1 p.m. each afternoon.
