New miniseries starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will debut on HBO

True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, is set to premiere this Sunday on HBO.

True Dectective follows two former police officers. The series begins with a hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. Martin Hart, played by Woody Harrelson, and Rust Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey, find their stride as they solve crime. The rugged, brooding men meander from bars to clubs as they try to gain information about the murder of a prostitute.

True Detective blends philosophy with drama. The former police officers have time for the more intricate details and the longer discussions. Some of the loftier concepts that are discussed include religion, existence, and morality, according to the LA Times.

Eight episodes of season one were penned by novelist Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga. Pizzolatto first created True Detective in the summer of 2010. According to Variety, the first season will focus on solving a mystery, and subsequent seasons will introduce different characters.

McConaughey was recently seen in the film Dallas Buyers Club and Harrelson appeared in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
