'Orange is the New Black' star Michelle Hurst awake from medically-induced coma following severe car accident

Orange is the New Black star Michelle Hurst, who plays Miss Claudette in the original Netflix series, was seriously injured in a car crash that occurred last month. Her injuries were so severe that doctors put her into a medically-induced coma.

The actress’ colleagues have joined forces to help cover her medical expenses by starting a fundraising page, which has raised over $13,000 so far.

In the description, the fundraiser’s creators wrote “Michelle Hurst was in a bad car accident just before the holidays. She had major injuries so the doctors put her in a medically induced coma to avoid movement while they did multiple surgeries near her spine. She is out of the coma (after 16 days) and has opened her eyes! We can't send flowers yet because she is in ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. So we have set up a fundraising page.”

They note the funds raised will go towards the time she has to take off of work as well as the medical expenses from these surgeries.

EW notes they’ve already surpassed their original goal of $5,000 and now they’re shooting towards $20,000.

Orange is the New Black is returning to Netflix later this year for its second season.
