Suicide attack on Kabul restaurant leaves at least 15 dead

At least 15 people, many of them foreigners, were killed while eating at a Kabul restaurant on Friday. Some were killed by a suicide bomber and others from two gunmen who entered afterwards.

The Lebanese restaurant is known to be a popular spot for foreigners staying in Kabul as it's near several embassies and organizations, reports BBC News.

The Taliban stepped forward claiming responsibility on an attack that killed an International Monetary Fund representative and has left four U.N. staff missing. A British national was also killed during the attack.

Three suicide bombers approached the restaurant, but two were shot before they could reach the restaurant, while the one who did managed to set off his bomb. According to Reuters, the news was confirmed by Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi.

Following 20 minutes of exchanged gunfire by security forces and Taliban gunmen, two terrorists were able to enter the restaurant and start shooting.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said that they are working on rescuing people from the ruined restaurant. "The clearance operation is still ongoing. Our security forces are not inside the restaurant yet. He added, "There might be some insurgents inside so we have to act carefully to avoid possible casualties."
