Three dead, dozens injured in Indiana pileup

Three people have died and dozens have been injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 94 eastbound near W 400 N.

WLS has reported that the crash happened near Michigan City, Ind. on Thursday afternoon.

According to the New York Daily News, 15 tractor-trailers and another 15 passenger vehicles were involved. Some reports suggested that many motorists were trapped in their cars.

State police on the scene are heading the investigation and may not have further details until Friday. The roadway will remain impassable for most of the evening.

“We removed vehicles and accessed some people that have been previously trapped. We're addressing those as we come to those, we have no idea how many others may still be located somewhere in the wreckage," said Lt. Peter Wood, Indiana State Police. "Right now the challenges are the cold and the darkness."

The temperature in the area only reached the low teens on Thursday.
