Top 8 worst results of the 2014 People's Choice Awards

Even though the Golden Globe Awards, airing Sunday, January 12, is considered the official kick off to the awards season of the entertainment industry, I wanted to reflect on what I consider the true start to the season: the People's Choice Awards, which aired Wednesday, January 8.

The slightly under-respected awards show is the one people really should care about most since it's the only show for which anyone and everyone can determine the categories and results. But it's also a good example, to compare it to democracy, of why your every day person can vote but shouldn't run the country: People don't always make good decisions, and the right people don't always get their voices heard. In terms of the People's Choice Awards, I am referring to the fact that some of the winning choices were absurd, annoying, and/or just plain wrong.

Here are the top worst results of the 2014 People's Choice Awards:

8. Favorite Movie Duo

The winners: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in Gravity.

Who should have won: Any of the other nominees (Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto-Star Trek Into Darkness, Jennifer Aniston & Jason Sudeikis - We're the Millers, Robert Downey Jr. & Gwyneth Paltrow - Iron Man 3, and Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy -The Heat)

My vote: Aniston & Sudeikis or Bullock & McCarthy.

Why: I love Bullock and Clooney, and I loved them together. I'd love to see them team up again. However, [SPOILER ALERT] their characters get separated somewhat early on in the film and it focuses mainly on Bullock's character, with Clooney's only reappearing in a hallucination or as a voice in her head.

Their dynamic was sweet and sincere but for them to have received the award over the other nominees who were powerhouse combinations that fed off each other in the most witty and laugh-inducing ways throughout their respective films is not quite right. Pine and Quinto were the Ying to each other's Yang, Paltrow provided some nice ammo for Downey's quick-draw sarcasm, Bullock and McCarthy's partnership made The Heat one of the most talked about comedies of 2013 and Sudeikis and Aniston were spot-on charming as a pot dealer and a stripper becoming enemies-turned friends-turned lovers.

Conclusion: As good as Bullock and Clooney are together and apart, in this circumstance, they weren't the most deserving and everyone else was snubbed.

7. Favorite Comedic TV Actor

The winner: Chris Colfer

Who should have won: Any of the other nominees except Darren Criss (Jesse Tyler Ferguson- Modern Family, Jim Parsons- Big Bang Theory, and Neil Patrick Harris- How I Met Your Mother)

My vote: Ferguson

Why: I don't understand why Glee is constantly put in the comedy category. I consider it more of a dramedy because while it is humorous and light, it's a bit soapy too, and rarely produces moments that are laugh-out-loud rather than simply amusing. Maybe because there is no dramedy category in awards shows? That's fine, then it can be in the comedy category but people need to stop voting for Chris Colfer. I like Glee, Kurt is a great character, and Colfer is good at what he does, but I find it hard to believe he's made anyone laugh the way the aforementioned three guys can—Ferguson with his rude sarcasm, Parsons with his, well, everything, and Harris with his party boy idiocy are, in my opinion, immensely more comedic than Colfer's I love music-and being in New York-and Blaine-and life-yippee character.

Conclusion: Sorry Gleeks, Kurt may deserve a job on Broadway, but Colfer does not deserve this award. The non-Glee men were snubbed.

6. Favorite Sci Fi/Fantasy Show:

The winner: Beauty and the Beast

Who should have won: Any of the other nominees (Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead)

My Vote: Once Upon A Time (for most original concept)

Why: I am just plain surprised by this choice because I don't really see or hear a lot of people talking about the show, and I'd be willing to bet it was a case of less fans but ones who were more willing to sit on the computer and vote all day—no offense to the fans, take it as a compliment that you are devoted. It's not a bad show—I watched and kind of liked the first season—but unless anything has changed since then, it's a bit cheesier and more shallow than the other shows, all of which I watch except Supernatural (though I wish I did). The Beast in the show is hardly a beast, and the writing is pretty corny, whilst there is a lot more depth, as far as I know, in the other shows and stronger, more believable chemistry between characters.

Conclusion: I believe the other shows are much better and that they got snubbed, but I might be missing something. Perhaps I'll catch up on the show and discover why it has such a good fan base.

5. Favorite New TV Drama

The winner: Reign

What should have won: Any of the other nominees (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Dracula, The Originals, and Sleepy Hollow)

My vote: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D or The Originals

Why: I admit I don't watch Reign and I watch all the others but Dracula, so I'm a bit biased. But looking at the reports about the show, this comes as a surprise victory. Although its final fall episode was its most viewed (1.86 million viewers, according to Deadline), the buzz about the show for most of its fall run was that it wasn't doing well in the ratings. In November, Entertainment Weekly reported that the show was losing too much of the fans from its lead-in, The Vampire Diaries. This inclines me to say that like
Beauty and the Beast, the victory came from a smaller quantity but more devoted fans refreshing their voting page.

Even if the show has picked up a lot of fans and gotten better, I'm surprised one of the other nominees didn't win. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has strong star power within the name alone and is a show complete with romance, humor, action and a great cast. Originals is steamy, mysterious and exciting and had somewhat of a built-in fan base from the get-go and Sleepy Hollow is being talked of as a surprise hit, with a charismatic lead character and all the right elements.

Conclusion: I don't know much about the winner but given what I have heard and what I've seen of its competition, this is a shock that I can't quite accept.

4. Favorite Movie Drama

The winner: Gravity

What should have won: Prisoners (possibly Captain Phillips or Lee Daniel's The Butler, too).

My vote: Prisoners

Why: Gravity is getting buzz for every award show of the season. Critics and people alike love it. But I don't get what all the fuss is about. Again, I am a fan of Bullock and Clooney, so don't think it's about them. They were great. But it really wasn't that intriguing. [SPOILER ALERT] It's pretty obvious when everyone else dies that Bullock's character is probably going to survive, and the whole movie is just her breathing heavy a lot and floating around. One bad thing happens, she copes. Another bad thing happens, she copes. And so on.

Meanwhile, Prisoners was an intense puzzle that kept you on your toes the whole time. You didn't know who to root for, who to feel bad for, who to dislike. I consider myself good at guessing endings and I wasn't entirely certain of any possible outcome at any point during the movie. There was pain, love, anxiety, anger, frustration, friendship, obsession, loyalty, lies, betrayals—an incredible array of emotions in the film.

I'd say that warrants the title of best drama much more than something with one main emotional story line: maintaining the will to survive.

Conclusion: I didn't see Captain Phillips or The Butler, but based on the other three I saw, Gravity was falsely rewarded and Prisoners was snubbed.

3. Favorite Actress in a New TV Series:

The winner: Sarah Michelle Gellar

Who should have won: This isn't about the other nominees getting snubbed, but instead, there's an actress who I think should have at least been nominated that wasn't.

Chloe Bennet portrays Skye, the witty, sarcastic computer hacker and agent-in-training on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Bennet is charming through and through, delivering comedic lines on point as well as sweet and sincere emotional scenes. Her character is both the odd man on the team, and the one that brings everyone together, and Bennet has great chemistry with her co-stars.

I'd add her to the ballot with the others, but if you had to kick one off to let her in, I'd say Anna Faris. Faris is great in her role, but the runaway star of the show (Mom) is fellow nominee Allison Janney, and even though Faris is the star, her character doesn't have the X factor that I think Skye does.

Conclusion: I don't know who most deserves the win, as all of the nominees, including Faris, make good contributions to their shows and have a certain unique and entertaining quality, but I do know Bennet deserved to be on the ballot. She was snubbed of her nomination. Perhaps next year?

2. Favorite Sci Fi/Fantasy Show Actress

The winner: Kristen Kreuk- Beauty and the Beast

Who should have won: Any of the other nominees except Ginnifer Goodwin- Once Upon A Time (Nina Dobrev -Vampire Diaries, Tatiana Maslany- Orphan Black, Emilia Clarke- Game of Thrones)

My vote: Any of the other nominees except Goodwin (sorry, I love you Ginnifer Goodwin, but your character is kind of getting boring—maybe if they spice things up a bit with the Mary Margaret part of you).

Why: I have nothing against Kristen Kreuk, though again, I think the show is a bit too cheesy. It's just that the competition is so good. Emilia Clarke plays a dragon-controlling tough girl who looks fragile on the outside but is a ball of fire on the inside and poised to take over an entire world. Tatiana Maslany plays several different versions (clones) of the same person in the context of a mysterious thriller plot, and Nina Dobrev plays two to three different versions (doppelgangers) of one person—a crazy evil one bent on survival, a crazy one bent on death, and an angsty teenager stuck in an ever-complicated love triangle. How can the actresses that pull off these intricately complex characters not deserve an award more than most.

Conclusion: No offense to Kreuk (and Goodwin, for that matter), but the talent the other nominees have shown is just too good to beat. She got lucky, and they were snubbed.

1. Favorite Country Artist

The winner: Taylor Swift

Who should have won: Any of the other nominees (Band Perry, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum)

My vote: Tough one but I'm going with Band Perry.

Why: Taylor Swift has talent. Her songs are catchy. She helped make country mainstream by blending the genre with a pop music sound. But most of her recent songs have aired far more on the pop side than country, yet people continue to want to call her the best country artist over and over again.

I've got nothing against her but if you want to give her awards, create a whole new category for her because calling her country is a bit misleading—especially when you consider the sounds of her competition in this particular instance. Her fellow nominees are true powerhouses of country. Blake Shelton is the poster boy, Carrie Underwood is, well, the poster girl, Lady Antebellum is one of the biggest bands in country music today, and Band Perry, still somewhat of a newcomer to the scene, has been cranking out hits, all of which contain the characteristics most associated with the genre: twang and soul. Although Swift's recent hits contain all the instruments that embody country music, they don't really have those other components, at least not on the same level as her competition.

Furthermore, Taylor Swift wasn't really that active in 2013. Beyond her collaboration with Tim McGraw and Keith Urban for "Highway Don't Care," her most recent big hits came in the fall of 2012.

Conclusion: Swift isn't bad, but she isn't country enough to be worthy of a victory over the powerhouses that were her competition. It's just not right.
