TV Ratings: 'American Idol' drops 23 percent to premiere low

American Idol returned on Wednesday up from last season's finale, but netted its lowest premiere numbers though it still dominated in ratings and in the 18-49 demographic.

Fox took the night on the back of Idol, which recently added new judge Harry Connick Jr. The network and show averaged a 4.6 in the important demo and 15 million viewers, reports HitFix. The numbers are down from a 6.0 rating the 12th season premiered to.

CBS came second with a distant 1.9 in the demo and 8.65 million viewers that tuned in for its two dramas. Criminal Minds remained steady with a 2.4 rating, while CSI ticked up slightly to a 2.0 in the demo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC took third for the night with 6.1 million viewers and a 1.8 in the 18-49 demo. The Middle dropped to a 1.8 rating against Idol and Suburgatory premiered down to a 1.6 in the demo. Modern Family slipped to a 3.2, while Super Fun Night stayed steady with a 1.6 in the demo. Nashville ended the night down with a 1.3 rating.

NBC managed 5.3 million viewers and a rating of 1.4 on the night. Revolution and Law & Order: SVU were both down to a 1.3 and 1.5 rating, respectively. Chicago P.D. slipped slightly to a 1.5 from its premiere.

The CW pulled in 2 million viewers and had a 0.8 in the demo. Arrow was down to a 0.9 and The Tomorrow People bucked the nightly trend and was up slightly to a 0.6 in the demo.
