U.K. box office falls for first time in a decade

Box office numbers have been increasing in the United States and internationally, but in the U.K. the box office fell 1% in 2013 and only brought in $1.92 billion. This was the first decline for the U.K. box office in a decade and the first real fall in theatrical revenue since 2003.

Variety reported that this was the biggest drop in more than 20 years.

Box Office Mojo released the earnings for the U.K. box office in 2013. The top grossing film for 2013 when it comes to box office sales was Despicable Me 2, followed by Les Miserables. Both films were released by Universal. Rounding out the 2013 box office included, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Iron Man 3.

Lucy Jones, Rentrak's business development director for EMEA, spoke about the decrease in box office numbers. “2012 was particularly strong, with three films grossing over £50 million ($82.1 million) — none achieved this milestone in 2013," said Jones.

A possible reason for the decrease was that in the fall of 2013, a large hitting movie was not released like back in 2012 when, Skyfall was released to large box office numbers and fan acclaim.

In regards to the gap left from Skyfall Jones commented by saying, “This left a big gap to be filled in the latter part of the year, and we didn’t quite make it.”
