'Weekend At Bernie's' director, writer file multimillion-dollar lawsuit

The writer and director of Weekend At Bernie's have filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit targeting MGM and 20th Century Fox.

Robert Klane and Ted Kotcheff claim that the movie studios owe them profits relating to their film, reports Deadline. The suit alleges that they "have been, and continue to be, deprived of at least hundreds of millions of dollars."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Klane and Kotcheff had contracts that guaranteed them both compensation and gross profits from the movie, which they say made over $30 million. They also say actual revenues for distributors has been more than $16 million.

Despite their contracts, neither say they have ever received any money from the movie studios. Deadline notes that MGM and Fox are both defendants because the rights were transferred from Gladden Entertainment Company shortly after the film was released.

Write Klane has also worked on such projects as National Lampoon's European Vacation, Walk Like A Man and M*A*S*H episodes. Kotcheff has directed Uncommon Valor and Rambo First Blood.
The creative duo are asking for unspecified "monetary damages" and want the suit taken to court.
