Woman caught by border patrol trying to sneak into U.S. in suitcase

Last month, Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a bizarre smuggling attempt at the U.S.-Mexican border, in which a woman squeezed herself into a suitcase.

CBP spokesman Victor Brabble said that the woman was a Thai national named Pornkamol Mongkolsermsak, reports CNN. She was discovered on Dec. 30 trying to cross the border in a Honda SUV. She was found while the driver was called to the office for another inspection.

The Associated Press confirms that the driver was a 56-year-old Phoenix man who was trying to cross the border at Nogales, Ariz. The name of the driver was not released.

Mongkolsermsak was in the suitcase, hidden under clothes. She was charged with re-entry after deportation. The CBP did release a photo of the woman in the suitcase.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement will now handle the case. It’s not clear if she has a lawyer yet.

The Phoenix New Times reports that the woman tried to enter the country through Los Angeles, but was “denied admission, excluded, deported, and removed from the United States,” according the the CBP’s documents.
