'American Idol' stars sue Sony Music for $10 million

Former American Idol winner and contestants are suing record label Sony Music Entertainment for $10 million in royalties. Artists attached to the suit include Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

The suit was filed by 19 Recordings, the music company founded by British entrepreneur and Idol creator Simon Fuller, Sky News reported.

Fuller created the concept of Idol and he aired Pop Idol in Britain back in 2001. Fox bought the rights where it became one of the most popular television shows on US network TV.

19 Recordings found the the issue from two separate audits of Sony's records.

Also attached to the suit includes former Idol alumni Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry and Jordin Sparks.

Attorney Richard Busch, of the Nashville King & Ballow, explained that legal action was needed to protect the rights of 19 artists that had been featured on Idol, Fox News reported.

Some of the artists mentioned in the lawsuit are amongst the popular and profitable musicians that have come out of Idol. Daughtry has had chart topping album, Underwood has become a country music superstar and Aiken is now running for Congress.

Sony Music Entertainment has not yet commented on the situation.
