Da Brat ordered to pay $6.4 million in assault charge

Rapper Da Brat has been ordered to pay $6.4 million to assault victim Shayla Stevens.

TMZ reports that a Jury has ordered Da Brat, real name Shawntae Harris, to pay $6.4 million to Shayla Stevens, a former cheerleader whom she assaulted in 2007.

Harris has already served more than three years in prison.

The Jury ordered payment of $3.7 million for permanent facial scarring, neurological impairment and mental pain. They added another $2.7 million for punitive damages.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Harris assaulted Stevens with a bottle at Atlanta nightclub, Studio 12, owned by producer/rapper Jermaine Dupri.

The Jury found Harris responsible for Stevens' injuries. However, Harris' attorney feels that the amount is excessive, and that the three years she served in prison was punishment enough.

"I'm baffled," Harris' Attorney B.J. Bernstein said. "She owned up to what happened when it happened and was punished."

Stevens' attorney feels that the ruling is necessary due to the fact that she has suffered permanent lifelong damage.

"She has a brain injury and is a brain injury survivor," Stevens' attorney Mark Link told The AJC. "It's not something that will ever go away. She had so much going for her and it [came] to an abrupt stop because of this attack."

Harris is still on probation for the aggravated assault charge.
