Fox cancels 'X Factor' after three seasons

Fox announced on Friday that the network has cancelled singing competition The X Factor after three seasons.

The news follows closely on the heels of the announcement that Simon Cowell would be returning to the UK version of X Factor on ITV as a judge, reports Deadline.

Cowell spoke of the show, saying, "I've had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on The X Factor and American Idol." He added, "And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I've always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!)."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show's cancellation also isn't surprising because of sagging ratings in each of the following seasons.

In the third season, the singing competition only managed a 2.2 in the advertiser important 18-49 demographic and averaged about 7 million viewers an episode.

Even if the show stuck around for a fourth season, Cowell would have been there in a largely reduced role and Demi Lovato had previously announced she was moving on as a judge.
