Giant new species of jellyfish hit beach in Tasmania

Giant five-foot and previously unidentified species of jellyfish washed ashore on a beach in the Island of Tasmania and now scientist are working to classify the new species.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the species that showed up in southern Tasmania this summer baffled scientists after one of the fish washed up on the beach.

"I'm just rapt by it, honestly. It's such an amazing find," said Lisa-ann Gershwin, a scientist at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that 12-year-old Xavier Lim was walking along the beach with his family last month when they came across the giant fish.

“We were at the beach looking for shells and dad was like 'Whoa! Look at that'... I kind of touched it … it was pretty cool," he said.

Dr. Gershwin and her colleagues have examined the slimy and mysterious creature and are waiting to have the new species classified and named.
