Government to give legal benefits to same-sex marriages

The Justice Department will include marriage benefits for same-sex couples starting Monday.

According to NBC News, Attorney General Eric Holder said the benefits will provide “lawful same-sex marriages full and equal recognition, to the greatest extent possible under the law.”

The rights given to these marriages extend into all 50 states, even the ones that have not passed same-sex marriage legislation. They also apply to situations dealing with banking, prison visitations and surviving spouses to officers.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said in a statement, "While the immediate effect of these policy decisions is that all married gay couples will be treated equally under the law, the long-term effects are more profound. Today, our nation moves closer toward its ideals of equality and fairness for all," according to Edition CNN.

Although information was unfolded today, the actual rights will go into affect Monday.

This package of benefits will bring same-sex marriages to a more equal standing as the opposite-sex marriages.
