Groupon celebrates Alexander Hamilton on Presidents Day, even though he was never president

Groupon doesn’t get in the news lately, as its popularity has been on the wane. However, it’s finally getting some attention, but only for one epic gaffe. The site, which provides coupons for local businesses, is running a Presidents Day promotion to honor Alexander Hamilton, except he was never president.

On Friday, in a press release that’s still online, Groupon said that it will be doing a promotion over the weekend - a coupon for $10 off a $40 purchase at a local business. “The $10 bill, as everyone knows, features President Alexander Hamilton -- undeniably one of our greatest presidents and most widely recognized for establishing the country's financial system,” the press release states.

However, as everyone knows (except the press release writer at Groupon, apparently), Hamilton was never President of the United States.

Although Hamilton is a Founding Father and one of the writers of the Federalist Papers, Hamilton was only the first Secretary of the Treasury. He helped set actual President George Washington’s economic policies.

If Groupon was trying to grab attention by making the mistake on purpose, it certainly has worked. Several sites, including Politico, have reported on the mistake. Plus, the company doesn’t appear to be in a rush to fix the mistake.

Maybe next year, they can give a coupon for $100 off a $400 purchase in honor of “President” Ben Franklin.
