Islanders' John Tavares out for season

New York Islanders captain John Tavares will be out for the rest of the season due to an injury he got during the Olympics in Sochi.
Tavares, who was playing for Canada in Sochi, was hit by Latvia’s Arturs Kulda along the boards during Wednesday’s game and didn’t return to the game. He suffered tears to the MCL and meniscus in his left knee as a result of the hit. Tavares is a good player and has been a huge help to the Islanders. He is the NHL’s third leading scorer with 66 points in 59 games, according to the Associated Press. In his five-year career he has played in 350 out of a possible 354 games, while never having a problem with an injury.
''That's tough,'' Team Canada teammate Jeff Carter said. ''He was a big part of our team and obviously, you don't want to see anybody get hurt no matter who they are playing for. He was a great guy in the room.''
Team Canada spokesman Kimber Auerbach said that Tavares will remain with the team in Sochi for the rest of the Olympics. He will undergo further evaluation when he returns home. The Islanders are expected to move pending unrestricted free agents Thomas Vanek and Andrew MacDonald up before the NHL’s March 5 trade deadline.
Tavares is just the latest NHL player to have an injury in Sochi. Mats Zuccarello of the New York Rangers didn’t play in Norway’s game against Russia. Detroit Red Wings and Swedish captain Henrik Zetterberg made a preexisting back injury worse with a herniated disk and is out indefinitely. The two players from the Florida Panthers in Sochi are also injured. Aleksander Barkov has a knee injury and Tomas Kopecky is out indefinitely after being elbowed in the head, ESPN reports. The Islanders are in last place in their division, nine points behind the New Jersey Devils. Team Canada plays against Team USA in the semifinals on Friday with the winner going to the gold medal game.
