'LEGO Movie' set to build up box office success, George Clooney’s 'Monuments Men' to come in distant second

The first animated hit of 2014 may just be about building blocks. Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie is expected to crush the competition, which includes Vampire Academy and George Clooney’s The Monuments Men.

The LEGO Movie was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who won over audiences with the first Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Their new film is earning rave reviews, with a near perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. That should response should turn into box office gold. It only cost $60 million to make and The Los Angeles Times note that conservative estimates for the film’s debut is at around $50 million. However, Box Office Mojo is predicting an even bigger opening at $68 million.

Next up is Monuments Men. Sony had hoped that the film would be ready for the 2013 Oscar race, but it wasn’t and the studio held it back until this month. They might have known something before the critics did. Despite a star-studded cast, it has earned mixed to negative reviews.

Still, people like Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett and Bill Murray, so audiences may turn out. Entertainment Weekly is predicting a modest $15 million opening.

Ride Along and Frozen are expected to keep reeling in cash and may stay in the Top 5 this weekend.

Vampire Academy is doomed to be a bomb. While the books it is based on have sold well, the Weinstein Company film isn’t expected to draw crowds. A $7 million weekend might be overly optimistic.
