Maddie Bowman wins gold for U.S. in freeski halfpipe

Maddie Bowman won the gold medal for the U.S. in the women’s freeski halfpipe event.

The Associated Press reported that Bowman scored an 89.00 in her winning run, beating out France’s Marie Martinod, who took the silver medal with a score of 85:40. Ayana Onozuka of Japan scored an 83:20 to win the bronze medal.

USA Today noted that Bowman’s win on Thursday and her male counterpart David Wise’s win on Tuesday, completed a U.S. sweep of gold medals in the new Olympic event.

This is the first Olympic Games for the 20-year-old Bowman.

"The way I've gotten here is taking it one day and one competition at a time and having absolutely as much fun as I could, and hey, it worked out," she said.

Bowman is from Lake Tahoe, Calif. She previously won a gold medal at the 2013 Winter X Games. At the time, she called that win the highlight of her career. Now, she has another highlight that comes with an Olympic gold medal.
