Mel Reynolds, former U.S. congressman arrested over Zimbabwe immigration, pornography laws

Former U.S. congressman Mel Reynolds was arrested in Zimbabwe over allegations that he was living in the country illegally and also ran afoul of the country's pornography laws.

According to AFP, the congressman is under investigation for immigration law problems and was found with pornography in his hotel room.

The local newspaper, The Herald, said that Reynolds was arrested after his hotel bill had exceeded $24,500. Police then discovered that the former Democratic congressman's visa had expired.

The country's immigration department spokeswoman Ario Mabika said, "We are with him and are conducting investigations. That is all I can say at the moment."

Reuters reports that when the police came to arrest him, he was found to have pictures and videos of porn, which is illegal in Zimbabwe.

The 62-year-old former congressman resigned back in 1995 after he was arrested and convicted of sexual assault, solicitation of child pornography and obstruction of justice.

Reynolds tried to make a return to politics in 2013, using the slogan of "Redemption," when he ran for a seat in congress.
