Michigan murderer escapes prison, but recaptured

Michael David Elliot, a 40 year old man who was serving five life sentences for a quadruple murder conviction escaped from Ionia Correctional facility in Ionia, MI late Sunday night, according to New York Daily News.

Elliot then reportedly broke into a red Jeep Liberty, took the car, as well as the woman inside it. When they stopped for gas in Elkhart, IN, the woman slipped away from him and called the police. Dispatch advised the woman to tell him that she had to use the bathroom, lock herself in there and not leave.

In a report by CNN, a woman found the car abandoned in La Grange County, IN abandoned in the small town of Shipshewana, which is about 20 miles east of Elkhart.

Authorities have told the public to not get involved with Elliot. "We would advise anyone who sees the vehicle or they see Mr. Elliot to not take matters into their own hands," said Michigan State Police Lt. Troy Allen in a statement made Monday.
