President Barack Obama said that there would be consequences for anyone crossing the lines of barricades around government protesters.
According to Yahoo News, Obama said the U.S. condemns the violence taking place in Ukraine's capital in the strongest terms. He says he holds the Ukrainian government primarily responsible for the past violence and anything that further develops.
Obama's comments on the subject were made in Toluca, Mexico at in international summit, in response to an estimated 26 deaths in clashes in Kiev on Tuesday and Wednesday, BBC News reports.
The Ukrainian government has suggested that they may call in the military for help resolving the conflict. Obama explicitly stated that having the military step in would be strongly condemned by the US, as this is a conflict that should be resolved among citizens.
He also said the U.S. is working with their allies in the European Union, as well as the Ukrainian government and opposition to resolve the conflict peacefully. One possible outcome is that the U.S. and E.U. may impose sanctions on Ukraine.
The international responses are a result of months of protests that recently erupted into violence in Ukraine. The protests notably intensified following their government's rejection, likely at the insistence of Russian allies, of a treaty to bring the nation closer to the E.U.
Since then, there have been repeated clashes in Ukrainian capital Kiev, resulting in the deaths of many protesters.
