Opening statements in Michael Dunn murder trial to begin

Opening statements in the murder trial of Michael Dunn, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis, are set to begin on Thursday.

According to CNN, jury selection lasted three days and the opening statements are expected to begin on Thursday. Dunn has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and to three counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Dunn story to police is that in November of 2012, he and his girlfriend stopped at a gas station after attending his son’s wedding when he heard loud music coming from an SUV. He says he politely asked the four teens playing the music to turn it down and then words were exchanged.

Dunn went into his glove compartment, pulled out his gun and fired multiple shots at the teens in the vehicle. One of the shots struck and killed Davis. Dunn fled the scene with his girlfriend and went to a hotel to order pizza, without calling police.

Dunn claims he fired because he thought he saw one of teens with a gun, but investigators told him that there were no weapons in the car occupied by Davis and his associates.

The Sun Sentinel has reported that Davis’ mother said that her son and his friends were “coming from the mall. They were being kids.”

The upcoming trail has opened up some of the wounds still fresh from the George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin case, particularly because Dunn is white, Davis was black, it took place in Florida and Dunn is claiming self-defense just as Zimmerman did.
