Oscar Pistorius' South African trial may be televised

The famed “Blade Runner”, Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius trial may be televised, a South African judge ruled, which could also lead to one of the biggest televised trials since O.J. Simpson.

According to Reuters, a South African judge ruled the murder trial of Pistorius, who shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, what Pistorius is claiming to be accidental, having mistaken her for an intruder.

"The justice system is still perceived as treating the rich and famous with kid gloves whilst being harsh on the poor and the vulnerable," Judge Dunstan Mlambo said.

The New York Times noted Judge Mlambo did state witnesses can withhold consent for their testimony to be televised, in which case their faces cannot be shown. He said that television coverage would involve three “unobtrusive” fixed cameras, operated remotely and set to prevent close-ups, and that it would be up to the trial judge to determine when the equipment was switched on.

Although no official date has been set, the trial will be held in Pretoria. The ruling also stated the trial may be photographed, and all hearings would be broadcast on radio.
