Petition to add 'Midnight Rider' crewmember to Oscars' 'In Memoriam' launched

A petition was launched seeking to add Sarah Jones to the upcoming Academy Awards' "In Memoriam" segment after she was killed during pre-production of Midnight Rider.

The camera assistant was hit by a train late last week while working on the Gregg Allman biopic.

Investigators found that the film crew were not supposed to be on the tracks, though they had permission to be on the land around the train tracks. They were told about two trains that were set to pass through the area, but a third one caught everyone off guard.

Now a petition has been launched on Care2 to have the 27-year-old included in the Oscars' annual remembrance of people in the film industry who passed away that year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The petition already has more than 30,000 signatures and will certainly hit the 31,000 the petition hopes to get by the end of the week.

Porter Versfelt, a Care2 member, wrote on the petition, "I worked with Sarah Jones on movies and TV shows in Georgia. She was a sweet, friendly and talented young woman." Versefelt added, "Honouring her ... will bring attention and safety in movie and television productions."

Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev also took to her Instagram to post a tribute since Jones worked on the set of the CW show.
