Poland honors couples married for 50 years

Two dozen couples were honored in Warsaw in a special ceremony that celebrated 50 years of marriage.

In Poland, according to Yahoo, being married for 50 years grants a couple a special presidential medal. Mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz stated: “To qualify, you have to put in over 18,000 solid days of work.”

Poland offers couple numerous medals depending on how long they have been married, but the 50 year honor is highly acclaimed. It is a classic tradition that has awarded an average of 65,000 medals each year.

The Chicago Tribune reports that ceremonies take place twice a month. The Polish believe that by setting these award ceremonies, they are setting a higher standard for marriage between couples.

“Divorce wasn’t in style,” recent medal recipient Krystyna Ceranska, 74, said. “The Church didn’t accept it, our community didn’t accept it, and our families were divorce-free.”

Poland is the only country to honor these long-lasting marriages with a medal, though many countries offer awards for the number of children a couple raises.
