Rangers' Mats Zuccarello suffers hand fracture in Sochi

For anyone who has their reservations about NHL players going to the Olympics, Zuccrarello's latest hand injury is a prime example.

There is always an opportunity for injuries and no team wants to suffer the fate of losing a beneficial player. Henrick Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings began the series of unfortunate events and suffered a herniated disc during the preliminary round for Sweden. He will be out for an extended period of time.

Wednesday brought the New York Rangers bad news about continuing without their leading scorer, Mats Zuccarello.

The New York Rangers right wing has 15 goals and 43 points in a total of 58 games and suffered a hand fracture while playing for Norway in the Olympics, as reported in the NY Daily News

Zuccarello will head to New York on Thursday for evaluation by the Rangers’ doctors. It’s undetermined how long the lead scorer will be out for, but there is assumption that he could miss 10 days to three weeks, according to CBS

The injury forced Zuccarello to sit out of his country’s loss to Russia on Tuesday. Although he didn’t receive any points during the three preliminary round games he played, but made 10 shots on goal and played on the ice for an average of 22 minutes per game.

It would be a real blow to the Rangers for Zuccarello to be out for an extended period of time.

The Rangers will face the Chicago Blackhawks on February 27.
