Signed copies of Mein Kampf, the manifesto written by Adolph Hitler to outline his plans for world domination, is hitting the auction block in Los Angeles Thursday. It is expected to fetch $25,000 and even the auctioneer admits that it is a “heinous” item.
Nate D. Sanders, who is Jewish, is auctioning the books online Thursday. Bidding will start at $20,000, according to Reuters. The auction ends at 10 p.m. EST.
The books were Christmas gifts to SS Officer Josef Bauer and signed by Hitler. Bauer took part in Hitler’s failed 1923 coup and served during World War II.
Sanders knows that the book is “heinous,” but the lot has historical value, notes The Independent. “...It is an auction item, it is a memento, it's a piece of memorabilia, and a piece of history,” Sanders said.
While Mein Kampf isn’t technically banned in Germany, the publication house that owns the copyright, Bavaria, as refused to publish it since the end of the war. Last month, a report pointed out that the book is experiencing a revival elsewhere due to its availability online.
