Two prison officials suspended following escape of murderer

Two Ionia prison employees have been suspended following the escape of a convicted murderer.

According to the Detroit Free Press, one officer and one shift commander who were working at the Ionia Correctional Facility the night Michael David Elliot escaped were suspended on Friday.

The two employees were suspended for what is being called a rules violation.

“There’s an employee disciplinary process that has to play out,” said Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan.

FOX 17 reported that both employees have been suspended without pay for the first week of their suspension per a union bargaining agreement.

The news station also noted that surveillance video showed a perimeter vehicle on patrol within 20 feet of Elliot during his escape.

Police have since captured the 40-year-old inmate after he fled the facility last Sunday.

Elliot was convicted of a quadruple first-degree murder in the early ‘90s and is serving two life terms. He also had prior convictions for arson and armed robbery.
