USA men’s hockey team defeats Slovakia

The United States Men’s Olympic Hockey Team defeated Slovakia in 7-1 rout on Thursday.

Sports Illustrated noted that Tomas Tatar scored for Slovakia in the second period to tie the game, but then the U.S. put on a pounding.

The Associated Press reported that Paul Stastny scored twice in the game. Ryan Kesler, David Backes, Phil Kessel and Dustin Brown all added goals. The U.S. scored six consecutive goals in under 14 minutes.

"I guess you never really expect to beat a team like that 7-1, and you never do it in a tournament like this," U.S. team captain Zach Parise said. "We just capitalized on the chances we had, moved the puck well and used our speed."

Goalie Jonathan Quick also had a stellar performance and made 22 saves on 23 shots in the win.

The team will enjoy this victory but they recognize that they have a tall task in front of them. They face the host nation and Alexander Ovechkin on Saturday.

Russia dominated Slovenia in their opener 5-2.
