Will Forte Fox comedy 'Last Man on Earth' gets series order

Fox is staying in business with Saturday Night Live alumni. Will Forte’s The Last Man on Earth has been given a series order before a pilot was even produced. It will premiere during the next television season.

The concept for the show finds Forte as the actual last man on Earth, notes Entertainment Weekly. However, seeing as this will be on a major network, there will likely be a few more crossmembers and Forte will find out that he’s not really the last human.

Forte, who impressed critics in 2013 with his performance in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, created the show and will executive produce. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the hot team behind The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street are directing the pilot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will air during the 2014-2015 TV season, but there’s been no word on how many episodes Fox has ordered to start with.

Fox has a continuing relationship with former stars and writers on rival NBC’s SNL. The network is currently home to Andy Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and is also developing Mulaney from former SNL writer John Mulaney. Tina Fey’s Cabot College has also received a series commitment.
