10 Must Haves for Summer

Summer might not be here yet, but we can dream. This past winter has the country craving for summer, or spring –just really warm weather. When you’re visiting the beach or spending time at the park, what could make it even better? No humidity! That would definitely be a nice subtraction to any season, but its here to stay.

Since there’s so much time to think, let’s make this summer the most prepared (at least in theory.) Those summer moments when your favorite song comes on the radio, you have nowhere to rush to and you just bought a blue slushy. What if those few moments could turn into the entire three month season, where relaxation is the emphasis?

Here’s a list of a few items that make the summer season that much better. If you don’t see your favorites, please feel free to add them in the comments!

10. Shorts

Whether they are Bermuda or short shorts, every summer you find your favorite pair of shorts to slip into. So when you do, buy a million pair. They seem to go with every outfit for every occasion. You could be sitting on a lake or seeing the newest movie flick and you will always be wearing those shorts you love. It’s amazing to find out you own anything other than shorts, at least in the summer.

9. Book

So one day a friend recommends a book to you. He/ She says “It’s great!” and their opinion is highly valuable because your friend was reading Shakespeare in elementary school. You borrow it and immediately read the first chapter. Then you have to go to work and afterward, attend your sister’s birthday party. You slide the book under the bed or beneath your pile of clothes. Weeks later you find it and the cycle repeats until the fall season starts creeping around the corner. Luckily your friend understands that you have other priorities and does not hassle you about the short novel less than 500 pages that took you at least three months to read.

8. Sandals

With the weather being so nice, people seem to walk around a lot more than in the winter months. You can’t walk around in uncomfortable shoes all day. Or you will completely regret that decision. Plus, having shoes that let your feet breathe relieves you of any sweaty sock issues later. Not to mention, they are really cute or cool(whatever your expression may be.)

[new page = The Blanket]

7. Blanket

This is an item that you never know you needed, until you were in a situation and needed it. Wearing light colored clothes can be really popular in the summer, because they do not attract as much heat. They do attract some things, like grass stains. Never underestimate a grass stain, because they are some of the most difficult ones to remove.

Different scenario, you and your friends are at the beach and want to take a nap. Who doesn't want a soft, yet light, blanket to rest on? They can also be helpful at outdoor sporting events, musical concerts and the occasional family get-together.

6. Backpack

This item is invaluable. In the summer, students are on summer vacation. Whether you are graduating to the 10th grade or becoming a junior in college, school is your source of time. Everything sort of revolves around that. When work becomes the source of time, you can sleep whenever you want and eat whenever you want –as long as you get to work on time.

It’s already bad enough when you spend the night at your best friend’s house and his/her mom automatically sets a place with your name on it at the dinner table. Afterward you two are watching a horror film and eating way too much popcorn. Someone says, “Hey. It’s 2 o’clock in the morning.” There’s obviously no point in going home, mostly because you two planned on watching the entire four movie series that night. Luckily you planned ahead and packed pajamas and work clothes. So tomorrow when you are 15 minutes early to work, you actually have time for a coffee run.

[new page = Phone charger]

5. Phone charger

Many mistakes have happened while your phone was dead. Especially now in the era of smart phones, those things suck battery life daily. When you are meeting someone and their phone dies, how frustrating is that? When you find them, the fun continues. Everyone has to come up with a good story to tell their girlfriend or boyfriend and probably their mom, because your friend hasn't answered the phone in 2+ hours. This whole situation never happens at a quite restaurant, it always seems to happen when there is a lot of noise. It’s at a concert, club, music festival or sports game.

Moral of the story: save your friends from being angry and having to come up with an elaborate story that they’ll never remember in the morning.

[new page = Big bucket of popcorn]

4. Popcorn

Every summer there are 20 movies you just have to see. Whether you wait up for opening night or go on Tuesday afternoon, you have to see them all. Movies and popcorn is a similar pair to peanut butter and jelly –they just make sense. Admittedly those bags each time can be pricy, so go ahead and take up the offer of the annual popcorn bucket for $29.99 (or whatever the price is.) It will save you in the long run, plus it’s a little easier to carry.

So when your friends come to the movies with you, you can offer to get the popcorn each time. It’ll only cost you like $2.00, but they’ll think you’re a big spender and might even buy your drink or your ticket!

[new page = Sunglasses]

3. Sunglasses

Every summer, a new look for sunglasses comes out. Sometimes they are white with sparkles or big bug glasses, but nevertheless find what suits you the best. No one ever said, those glasses are so last season, if you rock them with confidence. Buy a couple, so they complement your different outfits. Plus, the main reason is to protect your eyes from the sun –keep a spare pair in the car. Sunglasses can be so much fun in the summer and never shy away from the least expensive ones, those will surprisingly last a lot longer than you think. If those break in your pursue or pocket or get lost at a concert, it won’t matter as much.

2. Summer music

Music sets the mood in the summer. There are always songs specifically for that season and you’ll know all the words to them by June. You know when you have found the best sound for your summer, because the artist seems to be speaking directly to you. There’s a song about love, dancing, break ups and everything else you experience in the summer. When you find it, go ahead and buy it! You will want to listen to it every day until your friends start hating it or loving it, their choice.

[new page = Drinks]

1. Drinks

Obviously I’m talking about fruit drinks. Drinks of all nature: slushy, smoothie, limeade, bottled, fountain, floats and homemade concoctions. They seem to have the best flavors in the summer like tropical peach limeade or strawberry mango smoothie and even blueberry pomegranate slushy. C’mon, who doesn't want to try something delicious and refreshing?

The homemade ones are also great, because all you need is a little imagination and a thirsty tongue. Add a little lemon-lime soda and your favorite fruit juice and both bottles will be gone within the day.
