5.5 quake strikes in Andaman Sea off Nicobar Islands

An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude hit the Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands on Friday.

According to the Zee Media Bureau, the quake, at a depth of 10km from sea level, took place in the Nicobar Island region.

The US Geological Survey confirmed that the quake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale.

CNN noted that there have not been any reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warning was immediately issued.
The islands are an archipelagic chain in the eastern Indian Ocean. They are located in Southeast Asia and are part of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India.

The Nicobar Islands were devastated by the deadly tsunami that struck after an earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004. The disaster killed at least 6,000 of the island’s residents.

Strong quakes are not that uncommon in the region. Since 2005, two quakes measured over 7.0 on the Richter scale and one had a magnitude of 6.0.

Over 36,000 people call the islands home.
