Billy Crystal FX comedy pilot The Comedians gets series order, will air in 2015

Billy Crystal is officially set to star on television again. The legendary comedian will star in FX’s The Comedians, which has just been given a series order.

The project was first reported in May, when Crystal signed on to co-write and executive produce along with starring. Larry Charles (Curb Your Enthusiasm) co-wrote and will also executive produce. Matt Nix (Burn Notice) and Ben Wexler (Community) also worked on the script. Josh Gad joined the project in August.

Crystal will star as an older, veteran comic, who has just been paired with a younger comic (Gad) for a tour. It is based on the Swedish show Ulveson & Herngren. Fox TV Studios will be producing with Efti AB.

Deadline first reported today that the half-hour pilot was officially picked up. Production on the 13-episode season will start later this year and the show will premiere next year.

According to THR, this is Crystal’s first regular TV gig since ABC’s Soap, which ran from 1977 to 1981.

“We’re incredibly excited about The Comedians and the fact that Billy Crystal will be making his return to series television on FX," Nick Grad, co-presidents of original programming, FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. "The chemistry between Billy and Josh is amazing, and Larry, Matt, Ben and Billy did a fantastic job of making what is certain to become one of the best comedies on TV.”
