Bronx man dies after defending his mother

A man in the South Bronx lost his life while defending his mother.

According to The New York Daily News, Verbena Burgess was singing outside her home Sunday night when a group of men approached her from the opposite side of the street. They swore at her, insulted her, and threw objects at her.

A neighbor said Burgess, 50, told the men that she would call the police or get her sons if they did not leave her alone and they encouraged her, which led Burgess to call her sons.

Burgess’ sons came outside of the building and fought the group, then went home after everything seemed to be over, but the men returned later and forced themselves into Burgess’ home.

“When we started fighting, they ran. So we came back inside the building and they came back and they got inside our building, and we started fighting again,” said Burgess’ son, Shaquille, 20, according to The New York Post.

During the second fight, Verbena Burgess’ 24-year-old son, Tony Burgess, was shot in the head.

Tony Burgess was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“I looked after Tony and he looked after me. That was my pride, that was my joy. That was everything to me. Tony was a good person. He’d never hurt nobody — never ever ever hurt nobody,” Verbena Burgess said.
