Chipotle: Guacamole could come off menu because of climate change

The Denver-based restaurant chain says that guacamole may eventually be removed from its menu because of global climate change.

CNN cited Chipotle Mexican Grill’s recent Securities and Exchange Commission filings where it listed drought and global weather change among a list of business risks faced by the company.

"Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients," according to the company.

Think Progress.org noted on Tuesday that the Mexican fast-food restaurant may suspend serving some popular toppings and fillings rather than pay more for the goods.

“In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients.”

This news is upsetting to Chipotle fans who can’t image a burrito without guacamole, but it may become a reality thanks to the changing weather patterns.
