Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson fights lions, three-headed dog in 'Hercules' teaser

The second Hercules movie of the year looks like it might be more memorable than the first. Paramount and MGM have teamed up for director Brett Ratner's Hercules, which finds Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the mythical Greek hero.

The first teaser reveals that, for Hercules, Ratner and crew are going back to the time before Hercules was a demi-god and even a legend. That might also be a dig at The Legend of Hercules with Kellan Lutz, which bombed earlier this year.

“It's when Hercules breaks through the chains and becomes the demi-god he was born to be,” Johnson told USA Today about the image of Hercules breaking chains. “I was actually yelling with all the power I could muster, 'I am Hercules!' I gave it my all and made myself pass out every time we did it. But I honestly felt in that moment that I was born to play this role.”

Johnson said that he was fascinated by the Hercules legend, even as a child. “He was the first superhero,” he told USA Today.

Hercules is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, which was published by Radical Studios. The project got off the ground when Paramount and MGM agreed to co-produce.

Hercules opens on July 25. Here’s the teaser:
