Florida man sentenced to life in prison for murder of N.C. police officer

A Florida man has pled guilty to the 1996 murder of a North Carolina police offer.

Scott Vincent Sica, 38, pled guilty to the murder of Sgt. Greg Martin. He has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. According to My Fox 8, Sgt. Martin was shot six times when he stopped a vehicle on an interstate.

At the time, Martin was 30-years old and married with a daughter, stepson, and 6-month-old son.

Sica was not arrested for the murder until October 2012. Two other men, Brian Eugene Whittaker, 37, and Marc Peterson Olroyd, 42, were also arrested and charged with the crime in 2013.

According to The Miami Herald, Sica’s plea deal as allowed him to escape the death penalty.

“Right now it’s kind of relief and finally justice being served after so long, and it’s just a joy. Now it’s Daddy’s turn to finally rest,” Sgt. Martin’s daughter, Brittany, said.

Brittany, who was six-years-old when her father was killed, has said that her family has helped keep his memory alive.

“One door finally gets to shut and we get to open the next stage of our life and move on. Been dealing with this going on 18 years. It’s like you get to start over and you get to have a little more peace in life,” Britney said.

While Sica is behind bars and will remain there for the rest of his life, it is unclear when Whittaker or Olroyd will go to trial.
