Harry Potter spin-off will be made into a film trilogy

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will be made into a trilogy of films for Warner Bros.

In a profile for The NY Times on Kevin Tsujihara, CEO of Warner Bros., Tsujihara announced the project for the Harry Potter spin-off, stating that it would be made into a trilogy for the big screen.

“We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call, and then I got out the rough draft that I'd thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting,” Rowling said. She added that Tsujihara pushed her to adapt the book.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was written in 2001 between the publications of the fourth and fifth Harry Potter book. It is said to be "neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world", reports The Toronto Sun.

The story is based in New York and focuses on writer Newt Scamander who lives in a secret community of wizards and witches. It is set 70 years before the Harry Potter series began.

“I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it,” Rowling said, when the film project was first announced in September 2013.

Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books and eight movies have sold 450 million copies and grossed $7.7 billion worldwide, respectively.
