Leader of Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps, is on his death bed

The 84-year-old head of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church is now in hospice care in Kansas and supposedly, isn’t expected to live much longer.

Nate Phelps, his son who decided to ditch the hectic lifestyle his family is involved in, posted on Facebook that his father was “on the edge of death.” He also stated that his father was forced out of his own church and community last year, as reported by The Huffington Post.

His estranged son, Nate, left the church in 1980. "Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way," said Nate Phelps. "Destroyed by the monster he made."

Another son who strayed from the Westboro Baptist Church path, Mark Phelps, confirmed the news.
A spokesman for the church confirmed that Phelps is in fact in hospice care but states that “the source that says he’s near death is not well informed.”

The Westboro Baptist Church is infamous for protesting against the military and homosexuality, oftentimes picketing with deeply insulting signs that say “God Hates Fags.” Just last week, a Missouri Court decided that the Westboro protestors have to stay at a distance of one football field from funerals, according to USA Today.

"I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes,” said Nate Phelps.
