Moshav's 'New Sun Rising' album review

Moshav's newest album, New Sun Rising provides a diverse sound of folk, alternative rock and reggae.

Vocalist Yehuda Solomon and guitarist Duvid Swirsky were born in Israel, and they made music in Moshav Mevo Modiin after becoming childhood friends. They were discovered by American students who traveled to Israel to study abroad.

These students raised money to bring Moshav to the United States for a college tour, and they eventually burst onto the scene in Los Angeles. They have since played at various music festivals across the U.S. and the world.

New Sun Rising is Moshav's eighth studio album, released on Nov. 25, 2013. The album has nine tracks. The longest is just over seven minutes while the shortest is just under two minutes.

The opening track "Bella" is the shortest track on the album. "Bella" is an acoustic ballad with an indie folk sound. It is not one of the stronger tracks on the album, and it doesn't showcase the band's talent as the listener will hear in later tracks.

"Bereshit" follows "Bella", and it has a reggae sound. The song is comprised of entirely Hebrew lyrics, and it features the organ.

"Closer" sounds very similar to "Hava Nagila," which is a song typically heard at Jewish ceremonies. The tune of the song and its use of the violin cause it to sound like "Hava Nagila."

Other folk ballads in the album include "Cold Cry", which best highlights Solomon's vocal ability.

"Cold Cry" is one of the highlights of this album, but there are other tracks that have a different musical style that also make the album.

The best song on this album is "Heart is Open", which is the longest track. It has a great blues sound with skillful guitar work. It starts off relatively soft with an acoustic guitar, but an electric guitar eventually joins in. Toward the end of the song, you can hear trade off guitar solos from each of the guitarists.

The two other best tracks follow "Heart is Open." They are "Misplaced" and "The Only One." "Misplaced" stands out for its vocals and strong lyrics. In the chorus, you hear phrases such as "no home for the homeless" and "I'm tired of running."

"The Only One" is an alternative rock track that stands out because of its similar sound to Pearl Jam. It features a brief guitar solo and a percussion solo by Solomon, who sings in a lower tone.

Although it is not their best track, this album is best-known for Moshav's new single, "World on Fire." It features reggae artist Matisyahu and has an indie pop sound to it.

Overall, this album is very enjoyable to listen to, and it shows that the Israel-based band is unique and can perform different sub-genres of music. The vocal harmonies are well done too.
