Paul McCartney has auction of clothing, handwritten lyrics pulled

Sir Paul McCartney has requested that clothing and a piece of paper with handwritten lyrics not be auctioned off this week. The former Beatle says that the items did not belong to the seller, the family of the late Rose Martin.

The lot included a cape and suit McCartney wore and a small piece of paper that had just three lines of lyrics on it, reports Rolling Stone. The family of Martin, who was once a housekeeper for McCartney, said that the “Band on the Run” singer’s late first wife Linda McCartney gave Martin the pieces 30 years ago. According to the Telegraph, the family was hoping to get £30,000 ($49,500) for the lot.

McCartney’s reps said that the items didn’t belong to Martin, forcing Omega Auctions to pull the lot. The auction house is also auctioning off clothing the Beatles wore while making Help! and a piano McCartney and John Lennon used.

“At the end of the day we've got to make sure that, according to the law, we give them back to their rightful owner, be that Rose's family or Sir Paul McCartney and MPL Communications [McCartney Productions Ltd.]," Omega's Paul Fairweather said Friday. “We can only apologize to any buyers who were hoping to bid on these items.”

The lyric sheet contained the line “Baby, you couldn't have done a worse thing to me, If you'd taken an arrow and run it right through me,” which appeared in the 1979 song “Arrow Through Me” on Wings’ Back to the Egg.

Martin died last year and inspired a touching note form McCartney posted on his website. “She was fiercely loyal and our family and many friends will miss her dearly,” McCartney wrote.
